DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION (DEI) POLICY
The American College of Physicians (ACP) Connecticut Chapter membership is comprised of a diverse population of internists, subspecialists of internal medicine, and medical students. The ACP Connecticut Chapter values diversity and views it as one of its greatest strengths. The Chapter welcomes prospective members without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, genetic information, veteran status or any other protected status, geographic location, or professional setting.
The ACP Connecticut Chapter strives to encourage medical students, residents, internal medicine specialists and subspecialists from diverse groups to join the ACP, participate in chapter activities and decision-making, and also to strive to attain positions of leadership. The ACP Connecticut Chapter believes that a commitment to diversity strengthens the organization's capacity to respond to the needs of its members and their patients.
To achieve the goal of DEI, the chapter will work to create and support initiatives and purposeful activities to:
- Enhance inclusion and engagement of members from diverse backgrounds in all chapter activities
- Enhance coaching, mentorship, and sponsorship of members from diverse groups to attain decision-making and leadership positions within the committees of the ACP Connecticut Chapter
- Increase Chapter awards and recognition to members of diverse groups
- Encourage collaboration within and outside the chapter of diverse stakeholders
- Improve skills and attitudes of its members in the area of DEI in as it pertains to colleagues and patients
Currently, the Connecticut Chapter annually solicits nominations to recognize distinguished internists and subspecialists for their accomplishments in a wide variety of areas, including the practice of medicine, teaching, research, public service, and volunteer service. The chapter seeks nominations from a diverse group of chapter members and non-members. The chapter recently launched its first award in diversity, equity, and inclusion to recognize members who have demonstrated excellence and have a track record of activities supporting this initiative.
The chapter reviews this DEI policy annually to ensure that it is meeting and updating the charge based on needs.
